Cause of Childhood Leukemia

Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells WBCs, the infection fighting cell. It is a common type of cancer and one of the top ten cancer killers. When a child has leukemia, it refers to a large number of abnormal white blood cells that are produced in the bone marrow. These abnormal WBCs congregate the bone marrow and surge into the bloodstream. As they are defective, they cannot protect the body against disease. The risk of infection increases.

Leukemia among children is a rare disease but it is the most common cancer in children and teens. One out of three children who has cancer has leukemia. There are a few risk factors related to this type of cancer but there is no known cause at present.
